Shogi 2 player
This is shogi for two people sharing one screen. Sente makes a move, passes the device across the table, and gote replies. “2 player” here means local pass and play, not a waiting room full of strangers.
The board is set for a human on each side: no AI reply, room code, or ranked queue. It works well for a friend at lunch, a family game, or two learners who want to pause over a position together.
The rules remain ordinary shogi. Captures become pieces in hand, drops return them to play, and promotion choices remain visible. Only the opponent changes: someone beside you instead of the computer.
When to use this page
Use this page when a friend is already nearby, when a classroom or cafe table needs a quick shared board, or when “2 player” meant pass and play rather than online strangers.
When not to
Skip this page if you wanted ranked human matchmaking. That is not hosted here. Want a computer opponent instead? Use vs computer. Still learning the loop? Start with how to play.
Assumptions
Standard shogi rules. One shared device. Pass and play means both sides are human on the same screen. Local AI win/loss record does not bump on this seat the way solo practice pages do.
How
- Confirm the page is in pass-and-play mode: one screen, no AI reply after your move.
- Sente makes a legal move or drop, then hands the device across.
- Gote answers on the same board. Keep alternating until mate, draw agreement, or resign.
- Use undo only when both players agree the last ply should come back.
Examples
- A search for 2 player online that really meant a couch game → This URL still means pass and play on one screen, not a lobby
- A friend sits down mid-lunch and wants a short japanese chess game → Open this page and take turns without creating accounts
- Two beginners who want drops and promotion without an engine interrupting → Human vs human on one device keeps the lesson social and immediate
Gotchas
- 2 player on this site does not mean network multiplayer. Same device only.
- Undo steps back one ply. It is not a full AI round-trip because there is no AI here.
- Resign and draw only make sense when both people agree whose turn and what the result should be.
- If one player wanted the computer instead, switch to the vs-computer page rather than forcing an engine into this seat.
Local
Why 2 player deserves its own door
People search “2 player” like a mission. Missions deserve a page already locked to that mode, not a homepage control that defaults back to the AI. Solo practice still matters elsewhere. This URL exists so a shared-screen game starts as a shared-screen game.
Want the engine back? Open play shogi against computer. Want rules without a duel? Use how to play.
Etiquette
Turns, undo, and keeping the table friendly
The status line should make clear whose move it is before anyone pokes resign. Undo is a courtesy tool, not a weapon. If both players are learning drops, pause on illegal attempts and reset calmly instead of racing.
A good same-screen game feels like a table at home: clear turns, visible hands, and no fake lobby chrome getting between the two people actually playing.
How this page fits
Two player here means two people sharing one device. It is not a matchmaking room or a remote game service. For a solo reply after every move, open Shogi vs Computer instead.
